the studio

Environmental portrait photography is about context. A blank studio backdrop tells people what you look like. A well-chosen location — or a space that reflects how you work and what you do — tells them something about who you are. That’s a more useful image for a website, a LinkedIn profile, or a press feature.

Most of my environmental portrait clients are business owners and founders who want personal branding photography that feels considered rather than corporate, creatives who work in interesting spaces and want images that show it, or professionals who need something warmer and more human than a standard headshot.

I shoot across London and can travel further if the location warrants it. I also have a fully dressed studio in Camberwell that can stand in for a real location when you need it to.

Location shoots work best when the setting does some of the heavy lifting. Your office, your workshop, your studio, a favourite part of the city — anywhere that says something true about you is worth considering. I’ll work with whatever light is available, supplement it where needed, and keep the setup as minimal as possible so we’re not spending the session building a kit.

Doorways, staircases, textured walls, open sky — London has no shortage of backdrops that cost nothing and look like a million pounds. If you don’t have a space in mind, I’ll suggest a few options based on what you’re after.

Not everyone has access to a great space. If your office is open-plan and characterless, your home isn’t somewhere you want a photographer, or you just want more control over the environment, the studio reception is worth knowing about.

It’s an eclectic, dressed space — Chesterfield armchair, red sectional sofa, hanging textiles, salvaged doors, tropical plants, and a blue industrial shutter that gives everything a completely different mood from a standard studio backdrop. It was built with shooting in mind and it shows. Most people who shoot there are surprised how little it looks like a studio.

If you’re coming to the studio anyway, it’s worth knowing that Camberwell has some genuinely useful outdoor locations within easy walking distance. A short session in a local park or on a quiet street can round out a studio shoot nicely — giving you a mix of controlled studio images and something more relaxed and natural. It’s an option I offer as part of portrait packages rather than a separate booking.
