that starts with the portrait
I don’t come from a purely commercial background, and that shows in the work. My portrait photography has always had an editorial quality to it — strong character, considered lighting, images that feel like they belong in a magazine rather than a catalogue. When I’m shooting fashion, I’m still thinking the same way.
The work I’d describe as explicitly editorial sits alongside a broader body of fashion and portrait photography that shares the same sensibility. The Breakfree shoot — a collaboration with makeup artist and stylist Carlos Moura — is probably the clearest example of that on this page. But most of the portrait work I do carries the same instinct: clothing, styling, and the person wearing them treated as part of a single image rather than separate problems.
Most editorial shoots are collaborations — with stylists, MUAs, and creative directors — and I’m comfortable working as part of that kind of team.
When the brief is
fashion editorial by another name
A lot of the work that crosses into editorial fashion photography London doesn’t arrive labelled as such. The Samuel Marino album cover shoot — commissioned by Universal Music — is a good example. The brief was a portrait, but the execution was entirely editorial: a full styling team led by Adele Cany, makeup by Carlos Moura, and the kind of attention to clothing and image-making that you’d bring to a magazine shoot. Most of this work happens in my studio in Camberwell, which gives the control over lighting and set that editorial work usually demands.
That’s the territory I’m most interested in — work where the portrait and the fashion element are inseparable, and where the image needs to carry a mood as well as a likeness. It’s where my background as a portrait photographer and the demands of editorial fashion photography meet, and where the work tends to be strongest.
