Dark Night: A Modern Gothic Study
In the mid-’80s, I was an indie gothic kid—spiky hair, dark clothes, and a soundtrack filled with The Cult, Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus and Sonic Youth. I wasn’t a full Goth, but my girlfriend at the time was, and given this was Glasgow in the 80s, we were very much the outsiders compared to our contemporaries. The aesthetic was dramatic and unapologetically bold—drain pipe black jeans, leather boots and oversized coats that swallowed you whole in the best way possible. All in black obviously… it wasn’t just about rebellion; it was about identity.

That same spark of inspiration hit me when I got behind the camera for my latest editorial shoot. Meghan Easland, a model and stylist with a truly gifted eye, had been developing the concept of ‘Dark Night’ for more than a year. The outfits she designed perfectly captured that gothic defiance and artistic flair—sharp tailoring softened by flowing fabrics, textures layered in a way that felt both intentional and natural.
The Modern Gothic Aesthetic
Meghan and I played around with the idea of movement in stillness, experimenting with techniques like dragging the shutter to add a ghostly blur and using effects filters to create in-camera distortions. The result? A visual story that feels both timeless and fresh.
Gothic fashion has really evolved, moving away from the rigid, Victorian-inspired shapes of old and into something much more flexible and adaptable. The modern take we showcased in Dark Night brings together traditional gothic features—like dark, moody colours, textured fabrics and striking contrasts—and blends them with cutting-edge fashion.

Modern gothic fashion thrives on contrast. A studded leather belt over a sheer silk blouse. A sharply tailored black suit with delicate embroidery. These unexpected combinations create a unique balance between boldness and sophistication.
It’s this very balance that made Dark Night so immersive to shoot—each frame captured a moment of transformation, where the raw energy of gothic fashion met the refinement of high fashion.
