London based photographer specialising in portrait and commercial work. I like taking pictures of people and products - environmental portraits, lifestyle, social, editorial and model portfolio's. Still learning - you never stop in a creative subject, its what keeps me excited about the medium. I have reached the point where I feel it can be developed as a secondary career.
How did I get here..... A spur of the moment purchase of a Nikon D50 at a trade show in 2005 rekindled my interest in photography. I always loved taking pictures but found film based photography slow and expensive. With the advent of digital and the introduction of consumer DSLR's I got the photo bug again.
I'm self taught with no formal photography training other than a evening course at the wonderful Photofusion in Brixton. My creative background was in textile design I moved to London in 1991 to complete a MA at Central St Martins. I used photography to develop textile design ideas at college. Design training develops your eye for colour, pattern, texture and proportion which are useful skills for any creative subject, including photography.
When taking someone's portrait I want to capture their character first and foremost. I prefer black and white portraits, there simplicity concentrates the viewer on the eye's along with texture and form of the face which conveys their character more in my opinion. I use of Strobist lighting, props and locations to create images. I also want my clients to look fantastic and I'm happy to Photoshop out the odd blemish!
